FG, NFF absent at Keshi’s burial, as Eguavoen eulogises late coach

It was crying time yesterday at Illah, Oshimili North Local Council of Delta State at the final interment of the late former head coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi as family members, friends, admirers, fans and associates of the late football icon sobbed and wept uncontrollably.

The cream and gold coloured casket bearing the remains of the famous footballer, who died suddenly in Benin, Edo State on June 7, was lowered into the grave at exactly 1.55pm.
Curiously, there were no delegates from the Federal Government and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), but officials of the Delta State Government were fully represented at the solemn ceremonies for the coach who won the African Nations Cup in South Africa in 2013. The burial ceremony began with a funeral mass at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
The state government team was led by the Deputy Governor Kingsley Otuaro, who represented Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
Other members of the state cabinet including the Commissioner for Information and members of the state House of Assembly were present.
Also present was the senator representing Delta South, James Manager, as well as the member representing Aniocha/Oshimili constituency at the House of Representatives, Mrs. Amaechi Mrakpor.
Keshi’s team-mates particularly the glorious Super Eagles of 1994, led by Austin Eguavoen, made an overwhelming presence both at the church service and the graveside. It was an emotional moment for most of them who could not hold back tears when the ‘Big Boss,’ as Keshi was fondly called, was being committed into the waiting arms of Mother Earth.

Apart from Eguavoen, other team-mates of the late captain present were Peter Rufai, Uche Okechukwu, Alloy Agu, Mutiu Adepoju, Ben Iroha, Edema Fuludu, Victor Ikpeba, Henry Nwosu, Austin Popo, Friday Ekpo, Frank Howard, Greg and Taribo West, among others. Kanu Nwankwo made a late appearance.
Speaking on behalf of Okowa, Otuaro said he personally admired the late Keshi as a young man growing in Benin City, adding that Keshi and his generation of footballers came at a time to blaze the trail and usher the nation into a new realm of football.
Otuaro said Keshi’s exploits in the soccer world brought glory to the nation, noting that the state government was already working out modalities to immortalise him while also prevailing on the Federal Government to do the needful in memory of the fallen hero.
Meanwhile, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III in a letter of condolence to the bereaved Keshi family described the passing on of the football icon as a great loss to the nation and the entire humanity.

Conveying his heartfelt condolences over “this monumental loss,” the monarch prayed “God in His infinite mercy” to grant the family the fortitude to bear “this irreparable loss.”
In his homily, Parish Priest of the church, Rev. Fr. Dennis Arinze described death as private affair and that funeral is a public occasion while the grief of the loss of a loved one is being bore by the family.
The cleric recalled that the news of Keshi’s death filtered into the community like a whirlwind in the morning if June 8, adding that since then, the community has been in rude shock taking into consideration the circumstance surrounding his sudden demise, just few months after the death of his wife.

“Stephen Okechukwu Keshi will continue to live in our hearts. He was a trailblazer who brought professionalism, dignity and discipline to football. As a Catholic, he was a real family man. We have a lot to learn from his transition irrespective of our chosen careers.
“The death of Keshi is an opportunity for us to reflect on our lives and the country. Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa blessed with abundant human, natural and water resources and arable land for agriculture. But we have nothing to show for God’s favour,” he said.

Amidst tears Eguavoen eulogized: “Our hearts are heavy, words are not enough to describe him. He was charismatic. He was our president with five others behind; hence people thought that there was a cult in the team.
“It was very difficult for anybody to deal with Keshi. May God give us the courage to swallow this bitter pill. We will continue from where he stopped.”

Military onslaught against pipeline vandals continues in Lagos, Ogun

In a bid to flush out the pipeline oil thieves operating at Isawo, Igando and Igbo-Olomu areas of Ikorodu in Lagos, and Arepo, Awawa, Elepete and Ibafo areas of Ogun State, the joint military forces have sustained an offensive against the oil theft cartel by bombing the area.
In an operation tagged ‘Operation Awatse’, (Hausa word for scatter), the military’s joint task force had at midnight on Thursday launched an aerial bombardment of the vandals’ enclaves, camps and hideouts.

The Joint Task Force comprises members of the Nigerian Navy (NN), the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the Nigerian Army (NA), alongside the Department of State Security Services (DSS), the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).
The offensive was due to the increasing cases of kidnapping, rape, acts of vandalism and armed robbery operations continuously being perpetrated by the vandals, who always come out of their enclaves to terrorize civilians in the respective communities.
In Ishawo, cases of kidnapping abound especially that of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) pastor and the recent abduction of the Oba of Iba, Oba Goriola. Fighter jets were deployed, attack helicopters and Alpha jets, not just to bomb the area, but as a show of force. When the intensive aerial bombardment began at midnight, pandemonium erupted as residents of the area thought the militants had struck.

Addressing journalists yesterday at the conference hall of the Western Naval Command (WNC), the Flag Officer Commanding, WNC, Rear Admiral Bobai Ducas Ferguson, said the offensive would continue until the vandals are sent out.
Given that the Operation Awatse has intensified efforts to clear out the enclave permanently, Bobai said they would still go beyond that to get to the chief sponsors of the vandals, to know who armed them with the heavy-duty weapons they were toting.
He said: “Last month, we got a directive from the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Gabriel Olonisakin, to carry out an operation in Arepo and dismantle the vandals’ camps scattered around Ishawo in Ikorodu, Ibafo and Arepo in Ogun State. Initially, we were directed not to use air power but when we carried out an assessment of the area, the vandals had moved from accessible areas to the mangroves. We got back to the CDS on how to take out the target through air power and we were directed to do a general assessment and deploy attack helicopters.
“But before then, we were in touch with Lagos and Ogun State Governments because the Areas of Responsibility (AOR) was within their domain.

“First, we deployed a surveillance aircraft to go see the area and we analyzed the videos and pinpointed the areas to be destroyed.
“The revelation from the video showed that a lot of pipeline vandalism was taking place in the area. We could see loads of jerry cans chained together in the area.
“The inaccessibility of the area helped their trade. Aside the fact that the water is shallow, they also cut down trees and blocked the waterways.
He further revealed: “On Thursday, we initiated action and we knocked down some. Later, the surveillance aircraft went up for another video surveillance to survey the area.

“In the video, one of the canoes had a GPMG gun and the interpretation is that what is happening there is well-planned, given how well armed they are.
“After the aerial bombardment, we will comb the area. Already, the Army, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the police have been able to identify the getaway routes and we have blocked it.
“The water component, which is the navy, has blocked the escape routes, too. Also, we have blocked the escape route at Abeokuta, Ogun State.”

Bobai, however, said one of the major challenges the military offensive is facing is the weather.
He said: “The weather is one of the major challenges because the clouds are low. So, the helicopter is finding it difficult to manoeuver. However, we will continue our offensive.”

On the casualty figures, the FOC said that is yet to be ascertained because the military is yet to get access to the area, adding that it would only be possible after the aerial bombardment.
Regarding possible arrests, he said the arrested vandals would be profiled, investigated and interrogated in order to get to the source of sponsorship for the cartel.

CHILD OF DESTINY

Memorise:

And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the Lord, to deliver thee. Jeremiah 1:19

Read: Jeremiah 1:4-8, (KJV)

4 Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

6 Then said I, Ah, Lord God ! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.

7 But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.

8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.
Bible in one year: Titus 1-3, Philemon 1, Psalms 22:22-31

MESSAGE

According to Psalms 115:3 , destiny has its origin in the sovereignty of God. It is also the plan that God had for you before creating you. It is what God says about your future. In other words, God had a purpose for your life, long before you were born. Joseph was a typical child of destiny. His brothers fought aggressively against his destiny. One good thing about destiny is that, your destiny, being the counsel of God for you, shall stand forever ( Genesis 37:18-28 ). Joseph started his life experiences with the first and second dreams which set him at variance with his brothers and parents. The fulfilment of his destiny took him through Portiphar’s house, the prison and eventually the palace of the Egyptians.

In the text for today, the Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah announcing his destiny to him. Jeremiah had been separated right from his mother’s womb to be a prophet. At times, we behave foolishly by arguing with God on why He called us; a call that is the reason for which we were born. More often than not, God’s plan for mankind does not appeal to the rational man, though it is the best for us.

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
Jeremiah 29:11

It is very important for us to embrace the truth in the above scripture. When we do, we shall not be guilty of spiritual insubordination. Jeremiah ignorantly argued:

“Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak for I am a child.”
Jeremiah 1:6

God called Moses to go and perform a task in Egypt but he was giving excuses of not being an eloquent speaker. Beloved, I want you to get something settled in your mind today; God does not call the qualified but qualifies the called so that He can take full glory for the success of the called.
The Lord said to Jeremiah

“Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.”
Jeremiah 1:7

The Lord further encouraged him not to be afraid of the faces of those He was sending him to. This is a lesson for those of us who are too scared to deliver God’s message in our places of work, school, community etc. The spirit of God will always give us something of eternal value to tell His people. God has destined you to be unique; it is left for you to allow Him to fulfil His purpose for your life. May the Lord fulfil your destiny gloriously in Jesus’ name. (30 July 2016 open heavens)

JUST DO IT RIGHT

MEMORISE:
And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. 2 Corinthians 10:6

HYMN 2:
O JESUS, I HAVE PROMISED.
To serve Thee to the end;
Be Thou forever near me,
My Master and my Friend;
I shall not fear the battle
If Thou art by my side,
Nor wander from the pathway
If Thou wilt be my Guide.

READ:
1 Samuel 15:16-23
16 Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?
18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?
20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.
22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

MESSAGE:
A good number of people confuse service for God's approval or acceptance. It will be profitable for people, particularly children of God, to understand that it is one thing to engage in the service of God and it is another thing for God to accept your service. The simple message for today is- "just do it right, and God will accept you and your service". The Bible says:

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." Romans 12:1

In our Bible reading today, we read of the first king in Israel who put sacrifice over and above being obedient to God and His Word. God told king Saul to go and utterly destroy the Amalekites and everything they possessed; from the king to the least of the beasts. However, Saul went, fought and won the battle, but failed to carry out God's instruction to the letter. When he was cross-examined by Prophet Samuel, he had the effrontery to tell Samuel that he had done what God asked him to do, except the spoil of sheep and oxen which he took to use as sacrifice to the Lord. This unfortunately cost him his throne. Samuel said:

"...Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams." 1 Samuel 15:22

There is a great lesson we should learn from the story of King Saul and the assignment he was given to fight the Amalekites.
Some people seem to be more spiritual than the Holy Spirit when you consider the way they claim to know everything about the ways of God. It is not unlikely that king Saul felt it would be a waste of resources by totally destroying the material resources in Amalek. It is also not unlikely that he felt it will be an act of wickedness on the part of God to have asked him to kill the king, Agag. Beloved, there are many types of Amalekites and King Agags that God will want us to get rid of in our life. The Bible lists some things that we must do away with in Galatians 5:19-21

"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like.."

Some so-called workers in the Church are still harboring these things that we are to get rid of, yet they are 'zealously' working for God. It is unfortunate that their labour attracts no reward. Jesus said on that day, they will come and say:

"We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity." Luke 13:26-27

May this not be your portion in Jesus' name.

PRAYER POINT:

Father, please help me to be obedient, and begin to do the right thing in your sight from now onward.

ASSURANCE OF BREAKTHROUGH

MEMORISE:
Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways. Job 22:28

HYMN 6:
What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer.

READ:
1 Samuel 30:6-8
6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.
7 And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David.
8 And David enquired at the Lord, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR :
1 Thessalonians 5, 2Thessalonians 3 & Psalms 20

MESSAGE:
Breakthroughs are of the Lord. The earlier the children of God understand this fact, the better for them. People look around for breakthroughs as if their power will bring it to pass. It is pardonable for unbelievers but it is not acceptable to professed children of God who know what the scripture says about breakthroughs.

“Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, this is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:7

This is one of the reasons why we know that our tomorrow shall be alright. I discovered this a long time ago and the words “my tomorrow shall be alright” became our anthem in the Redeemed Christian Church of God. Not because I know how to go about things, but because I discovered that the breakthrough of a man has already been established before his creation. For example, it was not man that forced light to come, neither was it man that created the animal kingdom over which he was made king. Why should I worry about how God will bring about my breakthrough? My breakthrough is settled in Christ.

Divine guidance is the secret of breaking through obstacles and challenges of life. In our Bible reading for today, we read about the secret of the victory David had at the raid of Ziglag. After David has wept for his loss, he gathered himself together and asked God if pursuing the troops that invaded him would be a profitable one. To receive unfailing breakthrough, asking God for divine guidance is inevitable.

Moreover, a prayer of decree can guarantee assurance of breakthrough according to today’s Memory verse

“Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.”

Our Lord Jesus Christ assured us of breakthroughs against all obstacles that the enemies may try to bring our way:

“…. Verily I say unto you, if ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.” Matthew 21:21

Beloved, the Almighty God is the Source of all human breakthroughs. Therefore, bring yourself to the favour of your Maker today and you will experience the breakthrough of your dreams.

PRAYER POINT:
Father, please remove all obstacles in my way to breakthrough and cause me to excel in Jesus’ name.

CLEANLINESS IS PRACTICAL GODLINESS

MEMORISE:
Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD. Isaiah 52:11

HYMN 4:
Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

READ:
Numbers 8:5-7
5 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
6 Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them.
7 And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
1 Thessalonians 1-4 and Psalms 19:7-14

MESSAGE:
One truth a child of God must embrace is that cleanliness is godliness in practical terms. God pays attention to personal hygiene as much as he pays attention to the spiritual purity of His people. In the book of Leviticus 14:43-45, we read:

"And if the plague come again, and break out in the house, after that he hath taken away the stones, and after he hath scraped the house, and after it is plastered; Then the priest shall come and look, and, behold, if the plague be spread in the house, it is a fretting leprosy in the house; it is unclean. And he shall break down the house, the stones of it, and the timber thereof, and all the morter of the house; and he shall carry them forth out of the city into an unclean place."

In our Bible reading for today, we read how God instructed Moses to take the Levites from among the congregation and cleanse them. There are many lessons we must learn from this passage. Why were the Levites singled out for cleansing? It is because they were special to God; they were Yahweh's representatives among God's people.

"But thou shalt appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle." Numbers 1:50

The Levites, being vessels of honor, were required to be cleansed to function as priests unto God. As such, children of God must be clean in and out because it is required of us to be physically and spiritually clean.

"And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean." Numbers 8:7

It is unfortunate to see that some children of God are not taking seriously the basic hygiene that can enhance their divine health. Some actually believe in divine healing, but do not live in clean environments, nor eat good food. Good food does not cost much. As a matter of fact, it is dangerous delicacies that are costly. So, in order to enjoy divine health, we must live clean lives. May the Almighty God grant us the ability to live clean lives in Jesus' name.

ACTION POINT:
Take care of your personal hygiene and observe basic health instructions in your home.

Righteousness is not Optional - Monday 25, July 2016

Memorise: As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death. – Proverbs 11:19

Read: Hosea 10:12 (KJV)

12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.

Bible in One Year: Colossians 1-4, Psalms 19:1-6

MESSAGE:

It is interesting to note that the righteousness that mankind has detested from generation to generation, right from the fall, is not optional! Many scholars have endeavoured to explain away what righteousness entails and play down its importance to the point that sermons that encourage righteous living are now scarce. Sweet and pet talks have replaced sermons that demand righteous living. This is why St. Paul admonished his spiritual son, Timothy thus:

“2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;” - 2 Timothy 4:2-3

There are some lessons to be learnt from the above scripture; firstly, sermons that will produce righteous living must contain reproof, rebuke, exhortation and doctrine. Secondly, there is a time in the life of a Christian pilgrim when he will have to make himself intentionally available to reproof and rebuke. This is because, after a long stay in the Church environment, which might have earned him titles, he might no longer be teachable. Thirdly, righteous living requires indoctrination; doctrines that are sound. In other words, there are doctrines that are not sound. So, believers must beware of doctrines of the devil.

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;” - 1 Timothy 4:1

Today, some children of God make righteousness an optional virtue to their own danger because the scripture cannot be broken. It says:

“Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” - Hebrews 12:14

Beloved, it is true we shall be ultimately saved by grace. This is why we must pray for that grace to live righteously without struggle, because there is no grace in struggle. This is what makes the Christians faith unique. Our God is able to help us live for Him if we are willing and obedient. If we will not rationalise sin but admit it as it is and cry to God for help. The Bible says:

“11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;” - Titus 2:11-12

I pray that as you desire righteousness today, the grace of God will bring it upon your life in Jesus’ name.

Prayer Point: Father, let your grace abound in my heart so that I may begin to live life pleasing to you as from now in Jesus’ name.

Memorise: For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. – 1 John 5:4

Read: 1 John 5:1-6 (KJV)

1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

Bible in One Year: Philippians 1-4, Psalms 18:43-50

MESSAGE:

Many people do not know how to overcome. This is the reason why they run from pillar to post, looking for protection against the attack of the agents of destruction. The Bible says:

“14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” - Hebrews 2:14-15

It is needless to run helter-skelter in search of protection. As a matter of fact, there is no other source of protection than Jesus Christ. Our memory verse for today affirms that whoever is born-again overcomes the world through faith in the Son of God, Jesus Christ. The questions now are: what does it mean to be born-again and how can you be born-again? To be born again, according to John 3:3-5, is to be transformed supernaturally by the Spirit of God when we admit to our sins, confess them, forsake them and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. When we experience this transformation, we become children of God. In other words, we become His favourites and He will begin to watch over us. Then, the promise of Jesus concerning protection will be fulfilled in our lives. He said:

“17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” - Mark 16:17-18

However, to be born of God demands some things from us. The Bible says in our text for today that the only way to know we are born of God is when we keep His commandments. Jesus said:

“….If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” - John 14:23

To be born of God is to keep His commandments. This is contrary to some counterfeit Christians of the present age. You cannot continue committing sin and claim that you are born again. Another obligation of someone that claims to be a child of God is that he or she must keep himself or herself pure (1 John 3:3). The Bible says

“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” - Hebrews 7:25

Beloved, there is abundant safety in Christ, come to Him with a strong determination to go with Him all the way; you will not be disappointed.

Prayer Point: Father, please make me an overcomer today and forever.

READ:
John 19:28-30
28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Ephesians 4:17-6:24 and Psalms 18:29-42

MESSAGE:
When our Lord Jesus Christ cried, "It Is Finished", He really did mean that it is finished. However, some children of God do not know the importance of that statement. Some believe that the wages of sin have been fully paid and so we are on our way to Heaven. Correct. Some people believe that all the misfortunes that came upon human race as a result of the fall have been paid for. This is equally true.
The problem we must however fix in our devotional reading for today is irregularity in the doctrine of the atonement of Jesus Christ. We must get it right and perfect.

Some believe that when Jesus Christ said "it is finished" He meant that He had paid the debt of sin in full and do not believe that they are missing a gem in the work of redemption. This category of disciples focus on the spiritual aspect of redemption, without paying close attention to the physical. It is needful here to say that the atonement of Jesus Christ is all encompassing- spiritual, physical, material, emotional, psychological and what have you.
For example, when Adam sinned, it was not only the spiritual aspect of his life that was affected; his career as a gardener was affected because he had to labour more for less. Even his wife had to undergo the rigours of labour at childbirth. In same vein, when the cure for sin came, it came in full. So, if you have been redeemed by His death at Calvary, I say congratulations because your ailing business, marriage, health condition etc are now redeemed!
The Bible says:

"For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.  2 Corinthians 8:9

The irregularity on the other hand, has to do with the belief in some quarters that because Christ has paid our debt in full, we can indulge in sin. This is not correct. Jesus Christ paid it in full to cater for actual and habitual sins. This is why the Bible says:

"Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest," 1 John 3:9-10a

On her encounter with Jesus Christ, the woman whose sin of adultery was forgiven her was told to "Go and sin no more." (John 8:11). So also was the impotent man that was healed by Jesus (John 5:4). Beloved, Jesus paid it in full for your deliverance from spiritual and physical calamities; sin, sickness, poverty and all, but He did not pay for you to continue in sin.

PRAYER POINT:
Father, I thank you for sending your Son, Jesus to pay the debt He did not owe on my behalf. Please let this atoning work deliver me from all woes of sin in Jesus' name.

Soldiers missing, 19 wounded after Boko Haram ambush

Nigerian soldiers are fighting Boko Haram militants in north-east Nigeria.

The Nigerian Amry has declared an unknown number of soldiers missing and nineteen injured after the troops were ambushed by Boko Haram fighters on Thursday in Nguro Gongon, Borno State.
Army spokesperson Col Sani Usman added that a rescue team has been deployed to the area while the injured soldiers have been taken to the state capital, Maiduguri.

The statement said the soldiers were ambushed after carrying out a successful operation against some militants camps.
The “soldiers basking on the recorded success, returning to their defensive locations, ran into an ambush by a group of Boko Haram terrorists who came to reinforce their fleeing comrades. The troops fought back gallantly killing several of the insurgents,” said Usman.

The Army spokesman said the Nigerian Army was working hard to ensure every person involved in the operation accounted for.

Balarabe, Mimiko, Aborisade, celebrate Gani Fawehinmi, task govenment on economy

Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State

Nigerians paid tribute to the late legal icon and founder of the National Conscience Party (NCP), Gani Fawehinmi at the colloquium held in Akure yesterday. They, however, condemned the Federal Government over economic policies they said have impoverished Nigerians.
Former governor of Kaduna State and National Chairman of Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), Mallam Balarabe Musa narrated the efforts of the late NCP founder and the sacrifices he made to sustain democracy, which led to his frequent brush with the law.

Musa, who described the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as anti-people, stated that government policies, instead of ameliorating the sufferings of the people, have further inflicted more pains on the masses.
Legal luminary, Dr. Femi Aborisade, who was the lead speaker at the event, who spoke on the twin theme titled: “Abolition of Poverty Is a Struggle the Masses Wage and an Agenda NCP Must Actualize,” maintained that the present economic situation has devalued the lives of the common man, adding that the hopelessness in the land was a result of self-inflicted greed of the politicians.

Aborisade called for the enactment of a law to spell out how all recovered loot will be spent saying. “We are not interested in only recovering the stolen loot but it must have effect on the lives of masses in terms of economy, education, power and others.”
He charged President Buhari to make the fight against corruption to be holistic and must not be discriminatory in his approach, insisting, “The fight against corruption must begin from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).”

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko disclosed that the Gani Fawehinmi Diagnostic Centre, Ondo, was established to honour the human right fighter whose contribution towards the sustenance of democracy is legendary.
He restated his belief in the need for restructuring the federation for economic prosperity and people-centred development for all the federating units and component parts of the nation.
The governor attributed the security challenges in the country to the poor Federal system, saying, “How can a unified police structure guarantee security in this nation? We must decentralize the police force so that the local and state can have their police,” he said, claiming it is the best global practice.

Mimiko revealed that he supported the removal of fuel subsidy because the nation does not have the capacity and integrity to operate it, adding that he country needs to embrace a new narrative that must counter neo-liberalism.

No evidence of sexual misconduct against Rep members, says Onyema

Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama (right) with Aduku Onoja , Director in the ministry, during an investigative hearing on the alleged sexual misconduct leveled against three lawmakers by the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle in Abuja.

Housekeeper, others refuse to substantiate claims

Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyema has said that there was no evidence to substantiate allegation of sexual misconduct by three members of the House of Representatives in the United States.
Outgoing United States Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, had in a correspondence to Speaker Yakubu Dogara, alleged that the three lawmakers: Mohammed Gololo, Samuel Ikon and Mark Gbillah, committed offences ranging from soliciting sex through hotel car park attendants and assaulting a hotel housekeeper in an attempt to rape her during the International Visitor Leadership Programme in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S. held between April 7 and April 13.

The minister, who appeared before the Mr. Nicholas Ossai-led joint House Committees on Ethics, Privileges and Foreign Affairs yesterday, said his position, was based on the information made available to him by Ambassador Entwistle.
Onyema argued that his position was reinforced by the fact that efforts by the Nigerian government to get testimonies from the accusers-an unidentified housekeeper and car park attendants in the Renaissance Marriot Resident Inn in downtown Cleveland to substantiate their claims-met a brick wall as they refused to respond.
Acknowledging that the publication of the allegations had smeared the image of the lawmakers, Onyeama agreed that Entwistle breached protocol by first sending correspondence to Speaker Yakubu Dogara on the issue without first notifying the foreign ministry.
The minister however, defended the decision by the US authorities to withdraw the entry permit of the three lawmakers, saying the American Embassy in Nigeria could exercise such powers at any time it deems fit.

According to Onyema, the allegations are just allegations on one hand, which the ambassador brought to the attention of the Speaker and of course it the evidence I felt was not strong enough.
“I had assumed there would be recording, pictures and DNAs and what have you but I was surprised that the alleged complainants refused to testify when approached by our own government,” he said.

The minister maintained, that the confirmation of this allegation I think is a bit ambiguous. It can only be confirmed to be true if a court of some sort has all the evidence and is in a position to have access to the facts. At this stage it is some people’s words against some other people.

NOT A VIRTUE!

MEMORISE:
As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. Proverbs 26:11

HYMN 4:
Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

READ:
Proverbs 15:20-21
15:20 A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.
15:21 Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a man of understanding walketh uprightly.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Ephesians 1:1-4:16 and Psalms 18:20-28

MESSAGE:
Foolishness is not a virtue; rather it is a vice that costs its victim eternity in hell fire. The Bible says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). In other words, lack of the fear of God is the beginning of foolishness. So, when someone decides to live without the fear of God, he does whatever he pleases without consideration for the Word of God, he feels he is free to do whatever he likes with his life, he behaves as if he owns his life, but in actual sense, his life is borrowed and the owner may ask for it anytime. Our Lord Jesus told a parable of a prosperous farmer who did not reckon with God in all his dealings. Considering the wealth he had possessed he said:

"And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?" Luke 12:19-20

Some people who claim to be children of God behave foolishly sometimes. Our memory verse for today says: "As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly." Some brethren who had been modest and holy are now regretting their past pure Christian life! Those vanities they forsook in the past are now back in full force. This scripture is now fulfilled in their lives. Jesus said when a demon is cast out of a man, he goes away but after sometime he comes back to check whether that life is still empty. If he finds the life empty he goes back to take seven more powerful demons to take possession of the life (Luke 11:24-26).
It is foolishness to go back to your old lifestyle after you have been cleansed from your former sins and impurities. The Bible says:

"For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning." 2 Peter 2:20

In the past, you could identify a child of God from afar off (with few exceptions of those who were pretenders). Many things that are now being celebrated were abominations in those days. It is unfortunate that a wholesale return to those vanities is now in vogue. Some Christian scholars were brought to me in my office by their leaders many years ago and I saw assorted wild paintings- red, green, silver, brown, pink etc on their faces and lips. I could not help but tell them that that was the first time I would see Bible scholars in such a wild exhibition of vanities.
Their leader then promised that he would do something about it and that when Lazarus came out from the dead he was gradually striped of the grave clothes he had on. Theologians know how to explain things away. Beloved, going back from your first love is not a virtue; it is rather a vice. Repent today, tomorrow may be too late.

ACTION POINT:
Check your life and see if there is any foolish act of sin, unrighteousness or backsliding. Repent.

Migrant shipwreck corpses ‘packed in like on Auschwitz trains’

.

“They squeezed them in everywhere for their last trip, packing them in like on the trains for Auschwitz”.
The harrowing task of recovering decomposing migrant bodies from a fishing boat that sank with hundreds of people aboard is finished over a year after it sank, but Italian firefighters’ spokesman Luca Cari is still tormented by the horror he witnessed.

“There were five (migrants) per square metre inside the boat,” he said in an article published by Panorama weekly on Thursday.
It was the worst maritime tragedy in the Mediterranean since World War II, leaving only 28 survivors.
The disaster happened when the converted wooden fishing trawler collided with a Portuguese merchant ship that had responded to its SOS signal.
The impact caused panicked passengers to surge to one side of the boat and it keeled over in pitch darkness.

Months later, the wreck was recovered and brought to Sicily. As firefighters pulled the final corpse free last week, Italian prosecutors put the number of victims of the April 2015 tragedy off Libya at 700.
The bodies were found everywhere, from the well of the anchor chain to the tiny underfloor compartment where the bilge pump sits, to the engine room, Cari said.
It was clear from their positions that many had fought tooth and nail to get out when the boat rolled — a struggle which proved futile.

“The image of their attempt to escape from the ship as it was sinking will be printed forever on our retinas,” said Paolo Quattropani, one of the firemen who lead the operation in Sicily.
They found the bodies of children, still clutched in the arms of their mothers, and did not have the heart to separate them, Cari said.
Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi had vowed to give all of the victims decent burials to highlight the human cost of the ongoing migrant crisis on Europe’s southern shores.

Since 2014, more than 10,000 migrants have died or are feared to have drowned while attempting the perilous journey to Europe by sea, most losing their lives in the central Mediterranean, according to the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR).

On Wednesday, rescue teams who pulled over 550 migrants to safety from rickety vessels in the Mediterranean on Wednesday said they had recovered 22 bodies they had found lying in a pool of fuel and water at the bottom of a dinghy

Hollande urges Brexit talks ‘as soon as possible’

French President Francois Hollande on Thursday urged Britain to begin talks to leave the EU “as soon as possible” and ruled out granting access to the EU’s single market without access by EU workers to Britain.

“The sooner these negotiations begin the better, and the shorter they are the better,” Hollande said after meeting Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny in Dublin, calling for negotiations “as soon as possible”.
“Things should not drag on,” Hollande said, hours before he is due to meet British Prime Minister Theresa May in Paris for the first time.

He said he expected May to give her “reasons” on why she was planning to delay until next year invoking Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty — the formal procedure for withdrawal from the European Union.
Hollande’s tough talk contrasted sharply with a more accommodating German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who agreed to give Britain more time to prepare its departure during May’s visit to Berlin on Wednesday.

On her first foreign trip since taking office in the wake of Britain’s seismic June referendum, May told Merkel that her government would not ask to leave the EU before the end of 2016 in order to plan a “sensible and orderly departure”.
Merkel, who is expected to play a pivotal role in the Brexit talks along with France, said it was in the interests of all that Britain had a “well-defined position” before beginning the negotiations.
Faced with growing euroscepticism at home, Hollande has taken a harder line since Britain’s seismic June 23 vote to leave the EU.
He has a presidential election looming next year and faces a challenge from the far-right National Front, which wants France to leave the EU too.
The Brexit talks are expected to hinge on Britain’s desire to restrict immigration of EU citizens but still retain vital access to the EU’s single market.
Hollande appeared to rule out the possibility.

“Access to the single market cannot be guaranteed unless free movement of workers is respected,” he said.
Hollande and Kenny also said in a joint statement that there should be “a balance of rights and obligations, including in respect of the four freedoms”, referring to the free movement of goods, services, capital and people in the EU.
EU immigration was an emotive issue in the referendum.
Brexit campaigners argued that the hundreds of thousands of EU immigrants arriving in Britain every year have been pushing down wages for low-paid Britons and overburdened public services.
– ‘Unique concerns’ on Brexit –
Ireland’s concerns revolve mainly around the future of its lucrative exports to Britain and its border with British-ruled Northern Ireland, which would be the EU’s only land border with Britain once it has left.

Prime Minister Enda Kenny has also raised the possibility of a vote by Northern Ireland, which voted to stay in the EU, to unite with Ireland.
“Ireland and France are the UK’s nearest neighbours, with significant and complex economic, human, cultural and historical links,” Kenny and Hollande said in a joint statement.
“In consequence, both countries have specific and indeed unique concerns to be addressed in future negotiations,” they said.

Britain on Wednesday took the first step towards Brexit by announcing it was relinquishing its six-month EU presidency which had been due to start in July 2017 and will be taken up by Estonia instead.

Goetze heads back to Dortmund

Goetze will go back to his former club Borussia Dortmund for the 2016/17 season after playing for FC Bayern Munich.

Germany’s World Cup winning goalscorer Mario Goetze has returned to Borussia Dortmund after a frustrating three seasons with Bayern Munich, the clubs announced Thursday.
The 24-year-old has never established himself with the German champions. The clubs did not give a transfer fee but Bild newspaper said Dortmund paid between 22 and 25 million euros ($24-27.5 million).
That would mean Bayern have booked a loss of about 13 million euros on the price they paid for Goetze.

Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge called the deal “a good solution for all sides”.
Goetze scored the winning goal in Germany’s World Cup final triumph over Argentina in 2014. But under Pep Guardiola, he was often on the Bayern substitutes’ bench.
He was also often among the replacements for Germany at Euro 2016.
Bayern’s new coach Carlo Ancelotti had hinted in recent weeks that he has told Goetze to find a new club.

Dortmund fans repeatedly jeered Goetze when he appeared for Bayern against his old team.
The player said he now has “a different view” of his decision to move.
“I want to try to convince everyone with my performances, especially those who are welcoming me with open arms,” he said.
In recent weeks, Dortmund have lost defender Mats Hummels to Bayern, midfielder Henrich Mchitarjan to Manchester United and defender Ilkay Gundogan to Manchester City.

VITAL INGREDIENTS OF PRAYER

MEMORISE:
And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. Mark 11:25

HYMN 9:
My faith has found a resting place,
Not in device or creed;
I trust the ever living One,
His wounds for me shall plead.
CHORUS:
I need no other argument,
I need no other plea,
It is enough that Jesus died,
And that He died for me.

READ:
Mark 11:22-26
22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Galatians 4-6 and Psalms 18:1-19

MESSAGE:
Our Lord Jesus Christ did not only give us an outline for prayer in what is popularly called "The Lord's Prayer" (Luke 11:2-4), He also gave us some vital ingredients of prayer. The first in our consideration is faith. The Almighty God demands that we have faith in Him. A man that prays without faith cannot get anything substantial from the spiritual exercise of prayer. When we pray, we should be assured that God is capable of doing whatever our desires are. Doubt is a grievous offence before the Almighty God. The children of Isreal that doubted the capability of God were consumed by the fiery anger of the God who had been erstwhile benevolent to them, however, as many as believed in His Almightiness received great recompense for their faith.

"But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord." James 1:6-7

Another vital ingredient of the prayer that God will answer is forgiveness. This is a two-edged sword. Blessed is he that is forgiven, sin is a hinderance to prayer. Unless we are forgiven, our prayers cannot be answered. This is why our Lord Jesus put an aspect of confession of sin in the prayer outline (Luke 11:4). No matter how old we may be in the Lord, if we discover any sin ranging from lying, outburst of unwarranted anger etc in our lives while we are getting set to pray, we must confess that sin first. The Bible says:

"If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:8-9

On the other hand, our Lord Jesus Christ said:

"And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses." Mark 11:25

Many of us come to the throne of mercy without the milk of mercy in our hearts. We come for mercy while we are not merciful; we come for forgiveness and we are not forgiving. What an irony? In Mathew 18:32-35, our Lord told the parable of the wicked servant who jailed his fellow worker that owed him a little after he himself had received pardon for a greater debt. His unforgiving spirit made him to forfeit the pardon for the debt he earlier received. Beloved, let us cultivate the habit of forgiving one another, at least for the fact that our Father in Heaven forgives every of our sins.

PRAYER POINT:

Father, please increase my faith and put in me the spirit that freely forgives.

Shock, disbelief as Frenchman, Le Guen, rejects Eagles job

Paul Le Guen

• Izilien, others want NFF Technical Committee members to resign.

In what appears an international embarrassment to Nigeria, Frenchman, Paul Le Guen, who was announced as Super Eagles’ new technical adviser on Monday by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), yesterday came out to say he never accepted the offer.
His reaction, which took many Nigerians by surprise, has further complicated issues for the nation in the fast-approaching Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

As expected, reactions have poured in from every corner, with many Nigerians calling on members of the NFF Technical and Development Committee to resign with immediate effect for committing a ‘schoolboy’ error.
On Monday night, the official website of the NFF reported that Le Guen had been named as the new Super Eagles helmsman by the technical and development committee of the football federation. The deal was, however, subject to Le Guen agreeing contract terms with the federation’s executive committee.

However, a top French journalist, Herve Penot, revealed on his verified Twitter handle @hpenot_lequipe in the early hours of yesterday that Le Guen had rejected the offer by the NFF and would not come to Nigeria since his conditions were not met.
Counter-claims from the football house followed a few minutes later.
While the chairman of the NFF’s Technical and Development committee, Chris Green, said Le Guen did not accept the terms offered by the football federation, the NFF Executive Committee stated that it never gave the Frenchman the Super Eagles’ job in the first place.

Speaking with The Guardian yesterday, former coach of the female national team, Super Falcons, Godwin Izilien described it as not only shameful but an international embarrassment to Nigeria.
“This is an international embarrassment to the country and in a society where people think normally, those who took the decision to name Le Guen as Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles should have resigned by now because they committed a ‘schoolboy’ error. It means these people never spoke with Le Guen before coming up with their pronouncement. It is not acceptable to Nigerians.

“I have said several times that the NFF Technical and Development Committee is made up of interlopers. Many of them did not play football. And the few ones who played the game did not coach football. So, you don’t expect them to give what they don’t have.
“This is what you always get when a country relies so much on foreign coaches. A Nigerian coach will never embarrass the nation this way. What Nigerian coaches want is free hand to operate and good salaries like our foreign counterparts,” Izilien said.

Also speaking with The Guardian, former Green Eagles winger, Adegoke Adelabu said: “I am sure the man (Le Guen) took the decision after finding out that the NFF has not been able to take care of local coaches. If the NFF can’t pay salaries of Nigerian coaches on its pay roll, what is the guarantee that they will be able to pay Le Guen? We have been embarrassed once again internationally, though this is not the first time.”
Green, who alongside others like Victor Ikpeba, Christian Chukwu and Paul Bassey, presided over the Technical and Development committee, revealed to supersport.com that Le Guen did not accept the terms offered by the federation.

“The announcement made on Monday by the NFF’s technical committee was quite clear. Le Guen was offered the job subject to contract terms being agreed.
“We had to look at the best interest of the country before offering anyone the job to manage the Super Eagles and one of such conditions was that the new technical adviser would reside in Nigeria.”

Chairman of the NFF Media and Publicity Committee, Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande, dismissed reports in local and international media of the Frenchman’s rejection of the position as simply preposterous.
